Kuna Community Gives Back to Needy Students
Boise, ID (8-2-10)– On August 14th, Kuna businesses, organizations, and individuals will once again join to host a community event designed to give people a chance to share with Kuna school students in need. The event begins at 9:00 a.m. at the gazebo in the Kuna City Park.
The purpose of the event is to provide school supplies (paper, folders, scissors, pencils, glue sticks, crayons, etc.) to school kids who can’t afford to purchase all the items they need to bring with them on the first day of school.
Businesses in the area have on-site donation boxes to collect needed items which will then be distributed to school kids who show up at Kuna City Park. Families or individuals interested in contributing supplies can simply drop them off at one of these locations in Kuna: Paul’s Market, El Gallo Giro, Uptown Coffee, Kuna Lumber, Kuna Chevron, The Willow Tree, Kuna City Hall, and New Beginnings Christian Church office in downtown Kuna at 333 N. Avenue C.
Individuals who want to contribute, but don’t have time to shop for or drop off supplies, are welcome to make financial gifts which will be used solely to purchase quantities of the above listed items. Contributions of money should be taken to New Beginnings Christian Church office at the above listed address.
The event started by John Whittaker, is in its third year. This year, Sam and Cindy Lou Gray are organizing and overseeing the event.
With the start of another school year just around the corner, many families hit hard by loss of a job and the financial hardship that follows are deeply grateful to get help. Kids suffer with the sense that they are somehow “less” than others if they can’t bring to school all the things “the list” tells them to bring.
Even teachers feel the pinch when they have to supplement classroom supplies from their own strained personal budgets. It happens every year as students come to school with empty hands and in need of pencils, crayons, scissors, etc. to use in class each day.
Shortfalls in State funding has resulted in widespread cuts to school budgets. As school districts try to grapple with trimming budgets, money available for classroom supplies shrinks and needy kids are more dependent on the philantropic generosity of businesses and individuals in their communities.
There are similar programs across the country, but on August 14th in Kuna, one community in Idaho will show how it is taking the initiative to help “take care of its own”.
